Tisha B’Av 9

On the Jews’ calendar, today in Tisha B’Av 9.  It is a very special day of mourning for Jewish people commemorating the many tragedies that have befallen them on this day in history.  It began at sundown yesterday and ends at sundown today.

Here is a piece I put together concerning this back in 2016…

Jews 9th of Av – our Jul/Aug

It was 1,946 years ago [from 2016] that Jerusalem and Zerubbabel’s temple (enhanced by Herod) was crushed by the Romans.  It happened on the 9th of Tisha B’Av which this year begins at sundown on August 13th.  What is most interesting is the number of things that have happened to the Jews on that very day of their calendar.(Their calendar is lunar so it does not stay with ours exactly.  It is corrected about every 3 years so their Av 9 falls somewhere in our July or August annually.)

The wall was breeched on the 17th of Tammuz in 70, so the Jews observed a 3 week fast from the 17th to the 9th of Av.

Here are B’Av 9 events that cause Jews to fast on the 9^th of Av:

1. On the 9th of B’Av, the children of Israel, cried and panicked over the prospect of entering the land under Moses when there were giants ahead.  God punished them with 38 years of life in the wilderness.
2. On the 9th of B’Av, Jerusalem fell – our year 586 B.C.
3. On the 9th of B’Av, Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans – 70 A.D. – 1,946 years ago.
4. On the 9th of B’Av (135 A.D.), the Jewish revolt under Simon bar Kokhba was smashed. After this the Romans literally plowed under temple mount and the surrounding areas of Jerusalem.  I think this is what is referred to in Daniel 9:26 when it says Jerusalem was destroyed as “with a flood.”
5. On the 9th of B’Av, the Jews were expelled from England – our year 1290.
6. On the 9th of B’Av, the Jews were expelled from France – our year 1306.
7. On the 9th of B’Av, the Jews were expelled from Spain – our year 1492.  This, in large part, funded the voyages of Christopher Columbus.
8. On the 9th of B’Av, Germany entered WWI – our year 1914.
9. On the 9th of B’Av (Aug. 2, 1941), Adolf Eichmann’s “Final Solution” was implemented by Himmler – the effort to exterminate the Jewish race.
10. On the 9th of B’Av (July 23, 1942), the Germans began emptying the Warsaw ghetto taking the Jews to the Treblinka extermination camp.

In Jeremiah 31:38-40 we read that God told those in Jerusalem about to be overrun by the Chaldeans that He was not done with Jerusalem.  God promised that Jerusalem would one day be great with people and animals (31:27), the Jews would truly love Him, (31:33) and the city would never be stepped on again (31:40).  That has not happened yet for after the Jews returned from Babylon, they were few, still didn’t believe (Jesus came to His own and they rejected Him) and Jerusalem was smashed by the Romans in 70 A.D.

So, Jews and Jerusalem are in the future – “Behold, the days are coming,” Jeremiah 31:27, 13, 38.

God knows the future and guides the present to His determined end.
