God’s Law Today?

God gave His people a set of laws written with His own finger on stone, Exodus 34:18.

What a huge event!  God’s will in writing and written by God Himself!

Such a document should be highly cherished by all people – especially by all people who love God and wish to please Him by obeying and serving Him.

But, does that which was given to the children of Israel at Mt. Sinai some 3500 years ago have any bearing or authority for us today?

I say, “Yes!”, for three reasons:

First – The Law speaks of God’s long-term engagement with His creation. It is permanent.

  1. It was written in stone.
  2. It was put in a treasure chest lined inside and out with gold, a very enduring metal.
  3. It was overseen by cherubim figures – guard angels – implying their actual oversight.
  4. It was it in God’s throne – under the mercy seat.
  5. It was put it in a vault – in the Holy of Holies of the temple.
  6. A death curse was put on any who would touch the ark, the Law’s storage chest.

Second – God declared the Law’s worth and importance to the church even after the finished work of Jesus at Calvary:

  1. Romans 7:12,Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.
  2. Romans 7:14, For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
  3. Romans 7:16, If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.
  4. I Timothy 1:8, But we know that the law is good…
  5. James 1:25, But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty…

How important is the Law today?

I Timothy 1:8, But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully…

Galatians 3:24, The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

How important is the Law today?  Important!  It shows our need of a Savior and thus points to Jesus.

However, the Law does not save!!

Romans 8:7, The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.  Galatians 2:16, For by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

As all men fail to fully keep the law, it offers no means for justification or righteousness.  Only Jesus saves as He kept every aspect of the Law and was completely innocent of any sin and was thus able to die for the sins of others.  So, faith in Jesus’ keeping the Law and dying for Lawbreakers who repent and seek His forgiveness brings eternal life.

Third – Once saved by faith, the Law becomes a revelation of God’s will and thus a guide for living a life pleasing to God and bringing on His blessing.

Psalm 19:7, The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul… 10, More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold;… 11, Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.

James 1:25, But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work…

When speaking of God’s Law, we are talking about His Moral Law – not the Civil or Ceremonial Laws.  Be careful as to what Laws are embraced.

I Timothy 2:15, …a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Colossians 2:13-14, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us.

Where people go astray is seeking to apply the Ceremonial and Civil Laws today.  That is, those laws about sacrifices, holy days and rituals.  The Moral Law stands and guides believers today!
