1 Peter 4:1

I Peter 4:1 is a rich verse of truths for contemplation and strength…

  1. Therefore – based on the previous verses…
I Peter 3:18, For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might               bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit
    Also I Peter 2:21, 24; 2:4; 1:10-11; 1:3
  1. since – know your history!  1,989 years ago [based on the year 2022 from His birth and beginning ministry at age 30 (Luke 3) and after 3+ years of ministry] came the most  important week in all of history – His death and resurrection. That week changed the world and thus history as it ended Jerusalem and the temple as a major religious center and sent the followers of Jesus into the whole world who turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6).
  1. Christ suffered! – 1,989 years ago Jesus endured the press of people, fake news (Pharisees         declaring Him in league with Satan), temptations of the flesh (in all points), attacks of Satan    (more at a more convenient time), the suffering of men living under the curse of sin (blind,          deaf, leprous, crippled, sick, etc.), rejection by his own people (and family!), torture for 12        hours by men (from arrest until noon) and then suffering the wrath of God for the sins of the    elect (noon to 3pm).  Also I Peter 3:17; 1:11, 19
  2. for us – I Peter 1:2-3, 9-10; 2:8
Cut off, but not for Himself, Daniel 9:26
Romans 5:8, But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  1. in the flesh – Jesus took a body – Merry Christmas!
Jesus suffered immensely in His body – excruciating pain, rejection (Mark 3:21, 31) and testings (Mark 3:9, 20)
Jesus raised His body (John 2:19) – a glorious Easter!
Jesus absorbed the wrath of the curse – death – and defeated its power – the grave.
So, the body matters – created by God, used to honor God and will be raised by God
  1. arm yourselves – you personally – get a grip on the truth and come to a resolve to submit to it.
Steel yourself – know and commit to standing for the truth even against all threats.  Phililippians 2:5, Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.
    Also I Peter 1:6, 9, 13; 2:7
  1. also – as Jesus – Jesus is our example, our pattern, 3:14
I Peter 2:23, When He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously.
Hebrews 12:3, For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.
  1. with the same mind – “Not my wil. Your will be done,” Matthew 26:39
Hebrews 12:2, Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame,
I Peter 4:19, Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.
  1. for he who has suffered in the flesh
Suffering is a mark of those who follow Jesus – II Timothy 3:12; I Peter 4:4, 12
  1. has ceased from sin – being in Christ means sin has no dominion (Romans 6:14) – it can’t condemn         nor rule. The saved one has an aversion to sin, a hatred of sin.  Sin is fled.  Sin is corrected.
    Also I Peter 1:14-15, 2:1

May God’s Word dwell in you richly!  (Colossians 3:16)
