A Learning Passion

I suggest that all men have a “learning passion.”  All!  I’m not talking about a drive to grasp Grammar, Poetry or Calculus.  Yes, some do have such a learning passion but for many the learning passion is other than books and school, yet still real.

Here are some examples:

>There is a passion to learn from pundits about strengths and weaknesses of two competing teams in order to know how to “wager” or “bet” on the outcome.

>Some are passionate to learn from talk radio so to know how to better argue their political bent.

>Some are passionate about a team, a star, or a car brand and strive to learn all they can.

>Some have a learning passion so as to save a dollar when making a purchase – they study reports and ads in order to make the perfect decision.

>Some have a learning passion for something loved: gardening, cooking, vacationing, etc.

>Some have a passion to learn about Greek philosophers or Greek gods or medieval times.

>Some are driven to know financials in order to invest in the hot places and get out of markets that might be tanking.

>Some have a passion to learn in order to be deemed smart, to test smart, or to get a scholarship.

>Some have a passion to learn what their favorite artist or actor is doing – paparazzi.

>Some have a passion to be in the know about the latest movie or sequel.

>Some are ever learning about enemies or the competition.

It is my position that all people have a bent to know – to learn in some area of life for any number of reasons: for pride, acceptance, monetary advancement, protection, or for promotion.

Men, created in the image of a wise, communicating, creating and teaching God, want to know!

It should be the passion of every true Christian to learn – to learn about God as to who He is, what He is about, what He has done, and what He thinks.  If I believe that God is all-powerful, all-wise, all-knowing, who loved me enough to take out His wrath on Himself in order to be able to accept me as a friend and even make me an heir – I should have a passion to know Him so to serve Him and please Him – with passion!  For not only is He amazing, He is the wisdom I need for living AND He promises to bless a passionate pursuit of Him.

Listen to A. W. Tozer (from How Much of God, AFA, March 2022, p. 30). A. W. Tozer: “Faith is the gaze of a soul upon a saving God.” “For the rest of his life, Tozer was consumed with seeking the presence of God.” He once wrote, “Oh, God, I have tasted your goodness and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more.  Show me thy glory I pray thee that I may know thee indeed.” “I am convinced,” wrote Tozer, “that the lack of grace in this day is due at least in part to our unwillingness to give sufficient time to the cultivation of the knowledge of God.”

So…

Acts 17:11, These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

Ephesians 1:17, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him

Philippians 3:10, That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection,

II Timothy 2:2, And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses

II Timothy 2:15-16, Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

II Peter 1:3-4, As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.
