If there is an issue that causes the most separation in our dear country it is abortion and the face of that issue is the Jan. 22, 1973, decision of SCOTUS to legalize abortion in all 50 states – Roe v. Wade. There are a number of other significant issues – spending and debt, climate concerns, vaccines, voting rights, care and worth of the poor, how to handle rogue and threatening states, race, sexual lines, socialism and faith, but abortion seems to be the most volatile and divisive. So what should we think and do about this that is dividing us and, in some ways, conquering us?
Recently the Supreme Court agreed to consider a Mississippi law greatly restricting abortions. For many pro-life people this is the moment long prayed for as the court today is more Constitutional and conservative and thus positioned to overturn Roe v. Wade. For some it is only right that the Court step back from their ruling for it was not theirs to make law – that belongs to Congress. For some the Court was in error to take away states’ rights in their blanket ruling. For others, the court was right to guarantee a basic human right as they found in the Declaration of Independence in the thought of “liberty.”
Whichever way the Supreme Court goes with the MS law and Roe v. Wade, there will be a huge outcry from the side that loses and it will be a huge driver in the midterm elections coming in a few months. It is thought that the Court will throw the duty of allowing and regulating abortion back to the states meaning it won’t go away, just shift battle sites and tactics.
The abortion battle in our country is the most visible point of a greater issue. A deeper battle concerns sexual freedom/expression – declared rights. “It is my body.” People should be free to seek love and fulfillment however they want as long as it doesn’t hurt others (the womb belongs to the woman and thus hers to control). There are a few abortions sought by married couples with the vast majority coming on the backside of sex outside of a marriage. Is such a right (the Declaration’s “liberty”) correct or wise? The truth is that abortion has broad consequences and long-term consequences for families and society (65 million less people mean less workers and thus tax payers for infrastructure and social care). The pain, anger, regret and fear take an unmeasured toll.
At the core of abortion is God and God’s Word. God claims to be the Giver of life (Matthew 19:4) which stands in opposition to the idea that there was some collision of atoms millions of years ago that caused life or some flux in nothingness that through a great number of mistakes and problems brought forth a human. A God-causing life is both feasible (considering Jesus) and logical. And God has declared the marriage of a male and a female as His will (Matthew 19:5) and that sex in a marriage is blessed and He punishes all other sex (Hebrews 13:4). Thus the root issue in abortion is God – God’s will and His word against sex outside of marriage.
So, the answer to the abortion problem lies in the heart and soul of the individual. That is, we can try to fix an issue with laws and enforcement or by turning the eye away and just letting it go per each person’s desire. But neither of those ideas will bring the desired result of peace and joy either individually or as a nation. The answer first-off lies in repentance and submission before God.
The second answer is that God’s people and pulpits do better, way better, at representing God and His Word in public. That means to legislators and neighbors. This idea of “separation of church and state” is not what the liberals scream, rather it is that the state will not endorse a church and give one church power over other churches – the old Church of England that our forefathers knew and hated. Every constitution of the thirteen colonies recognized God and called for His help. God was critical and NOT silenced!
God’s people need to speak up to their own family members who are living together and who are advocating abortion as a right. God’s people need to be God’s voice. God’s people also need to offer help to those contemplating an abortion. We must support those with a crisis pregnancy offering adoption, monetary support, or to walk with them on their journey. Let’s do better at preventing the need for abortions and the desire for abortions. Let’s be part of the solution – not, by silence, part of the problem.
