There is not a time in God’s glorious Word that does not prove rich! A recent Sunday School class teaching 3rd-5th graders was another such event. Here is a recap:
II Kings 13:14, Elisha had become sick with the illness of which he would die. Then Joash the king of Israel came down to him, and wept over his face, and said, “O my father, my father, the chariots of Israel and their horsemen!”
What marked the prophet’s ministry? The story in chapter 6 about God’s angel army surrounding the Syrian army which was surrounding Elisha. Elisha was in a world of trouble! – or NOT! God! Read the story (6:8-23) and be amazed and take note!
II Kings 13:20-21, Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year. So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.
Elisha raised two from the dead and Elijah one. Jesus raised 3 from the dead and then raised Himself – #7 – the number of perfection. After Jesus arose, many arose (Matthew 27:53) and in time everyone will rise (John 5:28).
II Kings 13:22-23, And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. But the Lord was gracious to them, had compassion on them, and regarded them, because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not yet destroy them or cast them from His presence.
The mercy of God and the residue of God’s people slowed the destruction deserved.
II Kings 14:12-14, And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his tent. Then Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh; and he went to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate—four hundred cubits. And he took all the gold and silver, all the articles that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.
When God’s witness was silenced (Elisha died), the nation fell into civil war which brought about the destruction of its security and wealth. When a nation takes away prayer, silences speech about God (Ten Commandment stones), and stops churches from meeting and evangelizing; that nation can expect civil war between reds and blues, a weakening of its place of strength before others with a rise of fear among her people, and a diminishing of its economic and monetary power. Humm!
Amos 5:6-7, Seek the Lord and live, lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, with no one to quench it in Bethel—You who turn justice to wormwood, and lay righteousness to rest in the earth!” 5:14, Seek good and not evil, that you may live;
God raised up a voice after the passing of Elisha which is a voice we need to heed: the nation must restore justice and righteousness! Our nation needs to return to the Ten of God.
Amos 6:14, “But, behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,”
God rules nations – moving them, using them and destroying them. United States, BEWARE!
Amos 8:11-12, “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God, “That I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but shall not find it.”
God might pull back His Spirit, His Word and His people and leave a nation without wisdom, direction and hope.
