Today the Supreme Court hears arguments concerning a Mississippi abortion law with an expected decision mid-summer. This is a huge day for the court and for us. While the right of women is on the line, much greater is the idea of what is carried in the womb of one who is pregnant – a mass or a human? If human, the right of that child is on the line. There will be great consternation whichever way it goes further polarizing our dear country and making the midterm elections next fall all the more important. Pray that the presenters are clear in their presentations or confusing. Pray that the justices and their aides are moved by the rule of law and Constitutional principles. Pray that they grasp their role as a check on Congress and the White House and not as a policy-making entity.
Pray today!!!
Lord, the author of life, giver of life and sustainer of life, we realize that the womb is Your work (Ps 139) and that we have ignored, rejected and insulted You by our attitudes toward the womb and our actions therein. Forgive us! May You empower, confuse, enlighten and direct the justices and may You give we the people of the United States a reminder of Your presence and power and our need to submit. May You be pleased to be known today in Washington D.C. Through Jesus we ask – Amen.
Here is a story giving substance to that idea – it is the revolt of Absalom against his father, David, and the counsel he was receiving:
II Samuel 15:33-34, David said to him (Hushai), “If you go on with me, then you will become a burden to me. But if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I was your father’s servant previously, so I will now also be your servant,’ then you may defeat the counsel of Ahithophel for me.
II Sam 16:23 Now the advice of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if one had inquired at the oracle of God. So was all the advice of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.
II Sam 17:6-7, And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, “Ahithophel has spoken in this manner. Shall we do as he says? If not, speak up.” So Hushai said to Absalom: “The advice that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time.
II Sam 17:14, So Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than the advice of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had purposed to defeat the good advice of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring disaster on Absalom.
II Sam 17:23, Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to his house, to his city. Then he put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father’s tomb.
