Grace IS Amazing!

Oh, the grace of God that saved an enemy like me!

AT THE CROSS, Isaac Watts
Was it for crimes that I have done, He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

AT CALVARY, William Newell, 1895
Years I spent in vanity and pride, caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died on Calvary.

[Refrain] Mercy there was great and grace was free,
Pardon there was multiplied to me, there my burdened soul found liberty – at Calvary.

By God’s Word at last my sin I learned – Then I trembled at the Law I’d spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned to Calvary.

Now I’ve giv’n to Jesus ev’rything, Now I gladly own Him as my King,
Now my raptured soul can only sing of Calvary.

O the love that drew salvation’s plan! O the grace that brought it down to man!
O the mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary.

MARVELOUS GRACE, Julia Johnston, 1910
Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

[Refrain] Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin.

Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold, Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold, Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide. What can we do to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide, Brighter than snow you may be today.

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face, Will you this moment His grace receive?

Note the repeated talk of brokenness, wretchedness, separation, guilt, pride and stain that mark man.

Grasping man’s terrible condition of which God was pleased to address and fix, makes His grace profound.  The more we understand our rebellion, selfishness and pride contrasted with His holiness, the more His grace is truly amazing.  The longer one is saved and studying the Bible, the more God’s grace is understood and overwhelming.  Growing in comprehension of God’s grace which is free, rich and abundant will lead to deep, somber and continual thanks to God and rich and exalting glory of God.

It behooves those truly saved by God’s grace to join the song writers in  marveling at God’s saving grace like did John Newton:

Oh, the grace that saved a wretch like me!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lord!

Grace is not cheap nor is grace a one-and-done; rather, grace is an amazing goodness from God that keeps on giving and growing.  Those who are God’s talk of grace, sing of grace, glory in grace and are zealous to not step on grace, nor take it lightly.

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord!
