Adam I was formed from the soil and God breathed into him life and he stood as a being made by God, eternal by God’s breath, and in God’s image [three in one – body, soul, spirit – able to create and control; able to appreciate love, joy, peace, beauty; and with a free will to freely give God glory (Isaiah 43:7)].
Adam I was placed in a garden with amazing beauty, happy animals and an abundance of succulent food. Before the day was out, he had a friend for fellowship, for teamwork to fulfill God’s agenda (subdue, fill, exercise dominion), and for prodding one another to glorify and praise God.
And it was “very good!”
Adam II (Jesus, I Corinthians 15:45) was formed in Mary’s womb and grew into a male adult and when about 30 (Luke 3:23), the “breath of God” (the Holy Spirit, Acts 2:2) came on Him and He was driven into a wilderness devoid of beauty with wild animals (Mark 1:13), without food, and without a friend – alone! Do we even begin to grasp what Jesus experienced as a perfect human and fully God in a cursed world and full of sin? Adam I in a garden and Adam II in a bleak wilderness!
Both Adams were on earth under a covenant of works. Both needed to fully obey in order for God to accept them into His eternal fellowship.
For Adam I, what was the test? He was in a very happy, good, perfect place with almost no options but to enjoy, praise, and marvel. But God gave him one test – the tree. The rejection of that fruit was the means whereby Adam could show his love for and commitment to God. God was not evil in placing the tree there but giving Adam a means to show his love. With no tree, he would have had no way to fulfill his part of the covenant of works.
Adam II had many “trees” – a myriad of trees! He had tests everywhere! Do we even begin to grasp what Jesus experienced as a perfect human and fully God?
In the wilderness, Adam II was challenged by the jealous Lucifer to break the covenant by disobeying God and doing things Satan’s way. Rather than the cross, Jesus was offered fame, power and blessings via a much easier path. And Hallelujah! Jesus said, “NO!”
Adam II was the opposite of Adam I who had agreed to Satan’s shortcut to blessings, power and fame without having to walk the life of full compliance and love in order to fulfill God’s covenant.
As Adam II’s temptation by Satan happened on the 40th day in the barren “garden”, it is most likely that Adam I’s temptation took place on the 40th day also.
So, Adam I thought it best to get to “blessings” on a different path than what God had laid out and on that path all men now trek leading to a “blessing” not anticipated. The glory is an eternal Hell of torment, darkness, loneliness, lack (water) and without purpose – it is the wilderness of Jesus magnified!
Adam II stayed the course and fulfilled the covenant with God to perfection (He finished the work He was to do, John 17:4) and then He submitted Himself to both God and man to be the object of God’s wrath for the sins of others and to take man’s unjustified wrath against God.
Adam I turned us onto a broad path to destruction, BUT Adam II stayed the narrow way and made provision for some to join Him in the blessings God has for those who fulfill all righteousness – a life with God in joy, peace, love, beauty and worth/purpose – giving God glory!
All praise, glory, blessings, exaltation, honor, esteem, love and worship to the Lamb – Adam II!
