Some of what was shared at the 2021 SSBC Sunrise Service.
Romans 1:3-4, Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
God the Father declared to all mankind that the birth (born – Christmas and seed of David – tying Jesus to an array of Old Testament prophecies), life (“This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased!”), work (“I have glorified it and will glorify it!”), and death of Jesus was fully accepted and marked by God with an exclamation point – “He is risen!” What a powerful statement!
Romans 4:23-25, Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
First, here is a clear restatement of Isaiah 53:6, All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
It is declared here that for those who believe, who accept Jesus as their Lord, their debt-laden account is replaced with an account full of the righteousness of Christ (imputed) making them fully acceptable to the Father (justified).
4:8, Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.
Those saved have a major change in status with God – from debtor to heir. Their ledger is no longer in red ink, but now black with credits.
And who is it that gets this incredible gift – a new account? Those of faith!
Romans 10:9, That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Those saved have a change of heart toward God – they are people who have a fear, reverence, and love of God and it is known – they talk about it! They talk about Jesus as their Lord who died for them and rose in victory over the grave and death.
In addition to being marked by talk of Jesus as victor, they have a new standing all because of Jesus!
Romans 5:1-2, Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
First, they, by faith, have a new status because of God’s grace. Here is one of the great passages about that transaction: Romans 3:23-26, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. God can erase their debt yet be just because their debt was paid – not just overlooked!
Back to 5:1-2, In that new standing, they have peace, joy and hope! All because of the full, vicarious work of Jesus at Calvary and declared so by God in the resurrection!
And for those saved, they have a new life, new mission, new purpose, new direction, new work:
Romans 6:8-10, Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more… He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
Those saved now live for God. “Not my will – Thy will be done!” Their desire and work is God’s pleasure – God’s glory.
What a glorious transaction is possible by the work of Jesus declared so by the resurrection!
