These Days…

March 15 – Beware of the Ides of March – March 15.  In old Rome it was the deadline for settling debts (something like our April 15 with taxes) and it was the day in 44 BC that Julius Caesar met his Maker as he was assassinated.  Such marked a change from a Roman Republic to a Roman Empire bringing on the role of the powerful Caesar.  Four years later, 40 BC, Octavian, who had seized control after a bloody civil war, executed 300 Senate members on the Ides.  Thus, the Ides was a huge world event then and a significant warning to us now:  pay your debts and beware of those who would cause civil war and radical changes to the nation.

…But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has some explaining to do. The CDC guidelines require mask and distancing requirements beyond the global standards with little if any evidence that this expanded set of rules makes a significant difference.  The global experience, marked by different approaches in different countries, shows that much of the COVID-19 mitigation science is subjective. The result: Americans live under more oppressive pandemic restrictions than many other countries around the world.  Consider CDC’s advice amid the vaccine rollout. Instead of trusting the efficacy of the vaccines and allowing vaccinated Americans to return to normal activities—the norm for past vaccinations—the agency released a complicated set of guidelines for vaccinated adults as a “first step towards normalcy.”
