Inauguration Day

I Timothy 2:1-4, Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Pray for our new President.  May he hear wise counsel and shun evil advice (pray for those who have the President’s ear).  May his heart be sensitive to those things that will make for peace.  May the rule of law and those values that have served America in the past be known these days.  May God raise up a Joseph or Daniel to serve in his court!

Pray for our President leaving office today.  May he find many reasons for joy from the four years he served “we, the people.”  May his words and service in the coming days be a blessing to the country and even to the new administration.

We pray that freedom of assembly, speech and religion will not be impeded for we have a charge to be open about God, His salvation found only in the finished work of Jesus at Calvary, and to proclaim the truth – the word of God in its fullness.  We have a duty to our fellow man but more importantly, to our great God!

And why the word “therefore”?  Paul had just admonished Timothy to fight the good fight.  We are to battle for the truth.

I Timothy 1:18, This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare,

And why should we pray that our government allows us to live quietly and righteously?  Why should we be active soldiers for our God?  Why should we pray fervently?  Our God tells us to do so and our God rules – alone!

I Timothy 1:17, Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Lord, may the transfer of power in Washington today be free of evil.  May state houses be free of violence.  May the American people find a renewed sense of allegiance and love of country and one another.  May You be pleased to move in response to the prayers of Your people to do above and beyond what we ask.  May You move many to find the true peace and goodwill found only in Jesus through the witness of Your people.  We look to You for there is much ado and afoot but You rule over all!  All because of Jesus and for Your glory!  Amen
