What a week! The elections in GA on Tuesday followed by the certifying of the Electoral College vote by Congress on Wednesday with some members rising up in opposition and a significant number voting along with the opposition. On top of that, the President’s speech urging protesters to go to the Capitol, which many did with some even forcing their way into the building and into offices and the “chambers of the people”. In the aftermath, five are dead, there are serious questions about the police protection of “the people’s house,” some cabinet members have resigned, Facebook and Twitter have banned the President from “speaking” and there is serious talk about impeachment.
What a week! WOW!
Three thoughts:
1. God foreknew and allowed AND also limited it all! Reread Job chapters 1 and 2. Let’s study our God and have a greater faith.
2. Jesus had twelve disciples – trainees to become the foundation stones for His bride, the church – and one was Matthew who worked for Rome and another Simon who was a Zealot (hated the Romans and active in seeking their expulsion). And Jesus chose both as His men and helped them manage their emotions and come to serve Him and love one another.
Is there not a lesson here for us?
SSB has people all over the political map. We have people who fit the “Trumpism” tag, those who voted for Trump because of positions and policies, those who tolerated the red in preference to the blue, those who voted blue as they are about more monies to the poor and disenfranchised, and those who hate Trump. We have them all at SSB.
So, what do we do?
We do as Jesus did: We love and serve one another with the mission of God’s glory, men being evangelized, and Christians growing to “put off” and to “put on” and thus be more like Jesus.
Let us not waver from the work before us!
I am not against talking politics – if you pay attention, I talk about the subject a lot! I talk about rule of law (judges, 1st and 2nd amendment support), I talk about national identity (Acts 17 and borders), and I talk about good citizenship (obey speed limits, don’t speak evil of leaders). Politics matter to me and to my neighbor. Let’s be political, but not angry, aggressive, or divisive. Let’s practice brotherhood and goodwill. Be careful what you post and how you say it. Let’s not be part of the problem, but part of the solution!
And the solution? “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8) knowing that for just 10 righteous God would have spared Sodom its just due – destruction. Let’s be better Jesus people and thus better citizens.
3. I think these elections have revealed a major issue that has gripped our people which is a lack of knowledge in civics and history. It appears to me that far too many don’t understand a Constitutional Republic, which we have been for 250 years, or what Democratic Socialism is about. Far too many don’t know how the German people became hoodwinked by a national pride fueled by a powerful leader that led to the death of millions – Nazism. To not understand our laws, our history and what moved other nations into evil toward their own citizens (Stalin and Pol Pot) and evil against neighbors (Iraq) is to believe that there are better options than our system. Oh, that we would be a better educated people. (Because of the ignorance among us, I am not a fan of “get out the vote”. If they are not motivated nor wise, let them stay home.). Let’s be learners and pass it on to those around us and to those coming behind us!
