Terrible Winds

Isaiah 7:2, And it was told to the house of David, saying, “Syria’s forces are deployed in Ephraim.” So his heart and the heart of his people were moved as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.

Great distress, fear and trepidation!  Why?  Because two enemies were at their northern border and threatening to conquer them and install a new government (6b, set in the son of Tabeel).

For us today?  COVID and Socialism loom at our border and are threatening major changes in our lives – changes we should not want for us, for others, or for our children!

So, what is God’s word to us? Isaiah 7:4b, “Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted” Psalm 46:1-2, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah. (think on this – our God is sovereign thus all is ruled by Him!)

For the people of Jerusalem, in great fear for their country and their future, God declared, “It shall not stand, nor shall it come to pass”,  Isaiah 7:6.  God was fully aware of the threat and was moving to eliminate it as He was calling the Assyrians to come to destroy the threat (8:7) – to defeat the two posturing kings.  [And the kings of the threat were both kings via the use of evil.  They had usurped the throne for they had both assassinated the legitimate king.  God made note of the evil by not calling Pekah by name but referring to him as the “son of Remaliah” (7:4, 5, 9; 8:6).]

The fix for fears and threats?  Isaiah 9:6, For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders!  Merry Christmas!  That child, born of the virgin Mary, was/is God – God in flesh – the God/man Jesus who is the King of kings!  Revelation 19:16, And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING of kings and LORD of lords.

He is King of all kings and kingdoms (including Satan and his domain).  His earthly reign will be: Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron, Revelation 19:15.  That King rules today!

The King looks for subjects who:

  1. Highly esteem Him and sincerely desire to please Him.  Isaiah 8:13, The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow; let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.
  2. Trust Him even when things are difficult and dark.  Isaiah 8:17, And I will wait on the Lord, Who hides His face from the house of Jacob; and I will hope in Him.
  3. Desire to know His will thus labor in His Word so as to know and obey.  Isaiah 8:20, To the law and to the testimony!

A warning:

  1. The massive Assyrian army would sweep across the lands of the two armies like a flood (8:7) AND come into the land of those fearful (7:2-3), but they would not be destroyed.  He will pass through Judah, he will overflow and pass over, he will reach up to the neck, Isaiah 8:8.  God can allow and also limit.  Read Job 1 and 2 again – evil, pain, and loss allowed and limited!
  2. To the king of Jerusalem being threatened, If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established, Isaiah 7:9.  The call to us – repent, submit, and serve or…
  3. To the United States, God says, “Give ear, all you from far countries.  Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces; take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; speak the word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.”  Isaiah 8:9-10.  Look to God and listen to God or lose.

May we be faithful subjects to the King and may the King spare us from the evils that threaten!
