In only a couple of ways do I hesitate in sending you another musing on the same day, but the point Piper makes is so what I was convicted by on the mountain back in October and tried to present in the past two sermons, that I must pass this on to you. Oh, may our hearts be moved again to awe, wonder and joy for what happened that day in history that we call Christmas!
[The highlights are mine marking the similarities to the convictions that have beset me these days. I can’t print the whole article here, but click on the link below to listen to all.]
That You May Believe Advent | Day 22 by John Piper (December 22, 2020)
John 20:30-31, Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
I feel so strongly that among those of us who have grown up in church and who can recite the great doctrines of our faith in our sleep, and yet who can yawn through the Apostles’ Creed — that among us something must be done to help us once more feel the awe, the fear, the astonishment, the wonder of the Son of God, begotten by the Father from all eternity, reflecting all the glory of God, being the very image of his person, through whom all things were created, upholding the universe by the word of his power…
…And whether from terror or sheer excitement, we will tremble and we will wonder how we ever lived so long with such a domesticated, harmless Christ.
May our “Christmas” be rich with God’s incredible work to redeem “poor orn’ry people like you and like me” from a slavery from which we had no means of escape.
But unto us a Savior was born – a Savior for me!!
Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span!
(“At Calvary”, William R. Newell, 1895)
Oh, be awe-struck with the Baby born in Bethlehem! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
