Lest We Forget (I sent this to the church on 09/14/2001)
I’m sure you watched with horror this past Tuesday morning as World Trade Center towers #1 and #2 and the Pentagon were savagely attacked by terrorists. I am also sure that, along with me, you have been nearly overwhelmed by the amount of destruction in life, property, and security.
It occurred on September 11 which is 9.11.01. Remember that some months ago I gave you a 9-1-1 verse (an emergency call number): Psalm 91:1(5) – He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
How fitting a verse for a 9-1-1 kind of day. Use that 9-1-1 open line to God constantly in these days.
I shared in Colorado on Tuesday morning (9/11) and again at our special Wednesday prayer meeting some verses and thoughts from Isaiah 26. I will cover them once again.
First, verse 5 – For He brings down those who dwell on high, the lofty city; He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He brings it down to the dust.
In many ways New York City and the towers represent(ed) the glory of America. God has allowed this strike at our “glory” in part to awaken us to consider if we are guilty of turning away from Him. If so, may we return and quickly!
Consider verse 10 – Let grace be shown to the wicked, yet he will not learn righteousness; In the land of uprightness he will deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.
Although written directly to the nation of Israel, the secondary application works when applied to the United States. We must deal justly and consider God in our dealings. Without God we are defenseless.
When considering these terrorists and what they have done, remember the truths found in verse 21 – For behold, the LORD comes out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; the earth will also disclose her blood, and will no more cover her slain.
Jesus is coming, get ready!
Then return to verse 3 – You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, for he trusts in You. We can find peace in the storm by keeping our focus on the great God of the universe and trusting Him.
The LORD: “My Tower”
Psalm 18:1-2, I will love Thee, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
Psalm 61:1-3, Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For Thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
Psalm 144:1-2, Blessed be the LORD, my strength, who teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight; My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and He in Whom I trust…
Proverbs 18:10, The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it, and are safe.
