My Diet

Toward the end of May, Janet asked me if I would go on a diet with her.  Without asking any questions I said, “Yes.”  I should have asked some questions.  A good rule in life is to always ask questions before saying, “Yes.”  But working hard to be a serving husband, I submitted to her plan and continue to this day.

WOW!  I have never eaten so much green and cauliflower in my life!  I have never asked more often what I am eating than these past couple of months.

Toward the end of June, Janet asked me if I wanted liver for supper.  I said, “Yes” but liver without a potato didn’t seem too appealing.  She said she had a mashed potato to go with the liver, but potatoes are not on the diet plan.  I should have asked what “a mashed potato” meant.  I did not and dutifully ate.  It was good.  After the meal I asked her what I had eaten.  It was finely ground cauliflower with cream.  Liver, onions and cauliflower – what a meal!

[Reminds me of a friend in Wyoming who owned a Mexican eatery.  One afternoon, about 2:00, Juan called me to his restaurant.  I complied and found Juan with two of his Mexican friends.  He brought out a burrito and announced that it was a “special food for a special friend.”  I started to open the burrito but Juan insisted that I not.  I was a little more than concerned because the two friends seemed a little too excited for me to partake.  Well, I did!  It was good!  Then I asked what I had eaten and Juan joyfully told me that it contained diced cow eye.  Humm – sorta glad I didn’t know ahead of time.]

About a week later Janet plopped down in front of me a pile of white with a hard boiled egg.  Yep, rice sized cauliflower!  Again, not bad.  But it was a meal of cauliflower and egg – what a diet!

One of the redeeming aspects of this diet is that I can have all the braunschweiger (ground liver) that I want.  What a rescue!  Almost daily I carve off a slab and enjoy.

I really do miss my ice cream, an occasional carbonated drink and a potato (and some chips!).  I catch myself craving some sugar every once-in-a-while.  Last night Janet asked me if I wanted some watermelon.  Boy was I excited for it meant something sweet!  (I have also found myself drinking more milk to alleviate some of my desire for something sweet.)

Tonight was pizza!  Yeah!  I asked what the base was and was told it was ground turkey. Again, strange yet good!

OK – it is a crazy diet that is working!  Some pounds have been lost so I plan to keep on until I get to a certain weight.  I do look forward to a bowl of ice cream and a big baked potato.  Until then, my “Yes” holds and the pounds are exiting – a very good deal!

So, be slow to say “Yes” and enjoy the cauliflower!
