I hate to say this or even think this, but Obama might be more right than I wish when in Egypt some ten years ago he declared that the United States was not a Christian nation. (We are still very Christian compared to most every other nation, but we are not as Christian as we once were.)
I recently read about an 82-year-old grandma decorating graves and about her good service to so many around her. She belonged to an evangelical church along with belonging to about a half dozen organizations that I would never belong to and would fuss with any Christian belonging to. She was touted as a Christian (and likely is) but from my take, with little or no wisdom as to anti-Christian groups and thinking.
I find myself repeatedly surprised by Christians jumping on the money bandwagon offered by our government. That is, if offered, take it! We all know that the government is offering money they don’t have and shouldn’t be offering as it is money being taken from those living here in the future. Future generations will be given a huge debt which will keep them from good infrastructure, protections, and perks (parks and clean roadways).
The issue of police brutality is once again front and center as is the issue of internal policing. If a policeman has a pattern – why is he kept on the beat or on the force? There will always be “weak links” so management needs to be dutifully vigilant and engaged. Those who make colored jokes or snipe at those of a certain neighborhood need weeded out despite what the union says or threatens. Fellow officers need to confront and then report. (Out of the heart a man speaks).
Concerning the protests – it is a 1st amendment right. The terrible evil perpetrated on George Floyd and his family is just sickening. I wish we had capital punishment that could be meted out timely. In other words, an execution should be held within a few months. God says that the hearts of men will be moved away from evil when a sentence is carried out timely (Ecclesiastes 8:11).
[If I were Derek Chauvin, the officer who murdered George Floyd, I’d want the death sentence and soon. Why? Just think of his future which most likely will be life in prison. I would think that death would lurk at every engagement within the prison population. He will either have to live in isolation to preserve his life or be given a different identity and moved to another prison which might work physically but the mental strain will remain. He has entered into a hell and without Jesus he is going to Hell!]
Protests, while a right, should not impinge on the rights of others. That is, protesters should be allowed to line the streets around 72nd and Dodge but not keep others from getting to work, to the doctor or to a grandson’s birthday party because the intersection is closed. Let us love one another and serve one another.
Then the rioting. Why? The violence against a fellow man is NOT Christian. The violence against national treasures – against the nation – is NOT Christian (Lincoln Memorial and St. John’s Church). The thievery and looting is NOT Christian. Do these people have NO scruples? Take away the Ten Commandments and take the God of justice and wrath and Hell out of the school system and what does one think will happen? May God be merciful to us!
In a constitutional republic the recourse to injustice and wrong is the ballot box – vote the creeps out of office! In countries that can’t vote, violence is the means to change. I’m curious how many of the protestors voted in the primary election a couple of weeks ago or have ever voted. Our high schools need to be teaching civics and parents need to be teaching and modeling civics!
It is time that churches, even good churches, reevaluate their mission statement which should be to preach the gospel – Jesus’ death, when embraced as their substitute, brings eternal life to doomed sinners. Too many churches today are about social justice over the gospel, freedom rather than separation or looking good to the lost over looking good to Jesus. Too many churches are about making bad people be or look good rather than seeing dead people made alive. Churches, even good ones, need to be the salt and light they are called to be that society might have a check on its natural bent toward greed, anger, and lust.
