Just this week I had another discussion about driving the speed limit – this one with a non-believer. He claimed that he followed the posted limit but the expression on his wife’s face told another story. But, the argument is, the police allow five over. So why not drive five or so over? Because the law says differently! When Bible says do not lie and the preacher says white lies are OK – to which should we harken and obey? If we are truly people of the book and those who embrace rule of law – the answer is clear.
Another point: just because you can do it does not mean you should. Just because something is legal does not automatically mean it is ethical or even Biblical. Be thoughtful and prayerful.
Point 3: Nothing is free! When we take handouts, we must realize that they are not free. Oh, maybe free to us, but they are not free as nothing is free – not even our salvation is free for Jesus paid a HORRIBLE price in order to gift us with second birth. I note the long lines of people taking “free” food. For some it is surely needed but for others it is taking from food banks what might be strained in a few weeks to help those truly in need. The monies taken are either coming from others now or from others down the road.
Point 4: Just these days we have printed tons of money and expanded debt by trillions thinking it is no big deal. But money not backed by value is soon valueless. In other words, simply printing money devalues money and thus means more money is required. Devalued money will soon require a wheelbarrow load to buy a loaf of bread. Those poor are made poorer – shame on us!
AND money from debt has both a price now and a payday down the road. The price now is the service on the debt year by year that takes money from tax revenues needed for infrastructure repairs and for things like National Park maintenance. Today we spend about 25% of our national income serving the debt that those before us have “blessed” us with. Twenty-five percent is HUGE money much needed today to fight viruses, enemies, and fix roads.
Point 5: Then there is the debt load being passed on to our children and children’s children. Such is an affront to God who says, A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, Proverbs 13:22. Biblically and traditionally, parents have wanted their children to do better than they. But debt is me spending money on me now and passing the bill to my children. Not right!
Point 6: Almost every election we are presented the need to vote funding for some project. The project is well promoted and the cost per each $1,000 of evaluation is presented. When looking at the annual cost for each property owner, it doesn’t seem much except when added to all the other projects previously approved. At some point, the tax load on owners is repressive. Because the cost for the project spread out over many payers seems minimal is not necessarily grounds to vote for it without taking a serious look at the whole picture. At some point spending needs checked. Another brick on a wagon is no big deal but eventually there is the brick added to other bricks that breaks the wagon. The little parts add up to a big issue.
Lastly, one of the huge problems in this country is that there is little to no fiscal restraint. Rather, the mindset is spend, tax, borrow, spend, tax, borrow, etc. Then when a crisis (in such as we now find ourselves) occurs too many homes don’t have anything to fall back on. Too many have no savings for a rainy day and they look to the government to bail them out. We are a people awash in bad fiscal thinking. You have money if you do not spend money!
