John 14:1, Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father’s house are many mansions…
So, with eternity in view, Jesus gave a couple of strong prerequisites for those desiring an entrance into Heaven when they are resurrected.
I. “You believe in God”
Who is God?
-
-
- He is without beginning or end
- He is one and three – a trinity
- He is holy – pure, perfect, and sinless
- He is immense – in and over all
- He created the universe in six 24-hour days
- He made man in His image
- He is angry with the wicked every day
- He loves Jesus
- He rules over all – every atom, virus, and bacteria
- He is to be worshiped passionately
-
II. “believe also in Me”
Who is Jesus?
-
-
- He is fully God and fully man
- He was empowered to perform miracles including raising people from the dead
- He was without sin
- He was murdered and buried
- He rose from the dead three days later
- He bodily ascended to Heaven and is enthroned
- He is ruling and coming again
- He taught that men are sinners and unable to save themselves
- He paid the sin debt owed God so that He only is the way to God
- Jesus will judge every man as to submission and works
-
III. What does it mean to “believe in”?
I can believe in electricity and not understand it.
I can believe in beauty and not be able to define it.
I can believe in marriage and not be married.
I can believe in God and not be saved!
Satan believes in God, Jesus, the Bible, and Hell AND is NOT saved!
That type of “belief in” is merely intellectual ascent.
The belief Jesus is pressing men toward is that which embraces those beliefs about Himself and God the Father with agreement, submission and obedience. The “believe in God” and “believe also in Me” that makes Heaven a reality at death is an allegiance to and love of God and Jesus. It is a desire for God’s presence, will (His Word), and work everyday of life.
Those who have such a belief are those who are truly saved.
So a person’s talk about Heaven, a place for them there, and Jesus coming back for them depends on a correct belief today? Do you have such a saving belief?
