D.C. – Political Talks

On Wednesday afternoon (09/11/19), from 12:00 until 5:00, we listened to a number of speakers.  Here are some of my notes:

Representative Barry Loudermilk of Georgia.

He told that his Dad often told him that when things are difficult it is a pretty good sign you are winning.  The more ground you take, the more bullets you take.

He told that the men of the 101st in 1944 figured they might possibly be home for Christmas.  However, on December 16th the Nazis mounted a huge offensive called the “Battle of the Bulge”.  General McAuliffe was told to move into Bastogne and hold it at all costs.  By December 22nd the conditions were ominous for it had been overcast and American planes were grounded, the German artillery was relentless, and the 101st was down to only a few tank shells.  A German appeared carrying a white flag and an offer from the Germans for the Americans to surrender.

McAuliffe had been told to hold Bastogne at all costs and he planned to do so.  He also knew that chances were good that his men, if surrendered, would be executed by the Germans or at best put into horrible prison conditions.  On the surrender note the German general warned that a refusal to lay down arms would bring widespread death to women and children and he knew that the Americans were troubled by that idea.  General McAuliffe consulted his officers and responded with a simple, “Nuts”.

Not long after the sky cleared and American airpower came rushing in and General George Patton, who had been coming at a furious place, arrived to rescue the 101st.

The principle?  Keep your eyes on the goal and not on your circumstances!

Representative Loudermilk was playing ball with other Congressmen on June 14, 2017, when a gunman opened fire discharging over 100 rounds in 8 minutes.  Representative Steve Scalise was seriously wounded.  While Loudermilk was ducking for shelter, he was not thinking how urgent it was for him to get back to the Capitol to pass a law against what he was experiencing.  Why?  The gunman was already breaking many laws!  Evil doesn’t respect laws.  The problem is a heart issue and thus so is the solution.  [The ambulance rushing Scalise to the hospital did not encounter a single red light.  There were some 20 things that seemed to be miracles.]

Loudermilk was on a train of Congressmen on January 31, 2018 that hit a garbage truck which attempted to cut around crossing arms.  The Congressman did not immediately think that making a law would keep other men from going around warning gates ever again.  There are already such laws.  The garbage men were already lawbreakers.

Two months later Loudermilk was hit by a distracted driver doing 110 mph.  Again, he realized that passing a law was not the answer.

His point?  The answer is not in laws or Washington, but in men embracing the gospel!

She reads every line of all proposed legislation.

A 2002 law declared that a baby at any stage of development is human but the law has no penalties.  H.R. 962 puts penalties in place.  Since February 5, the Speaker of the House has been asked 80 times to bring the law up for a vote.  If they can get 218 signatures from Representatives, the Speaker will be forced to bring the bill to a vote (currently have 201).
