From the pledge to our flag, these truths we hold dear (we should hold dear):
One nation
under God
indivisible
with liberty
and justice
for all.
How special and how critical are every one of those points! We have been so blessed living under those points and thus the envy of most of the world.
For decades we as a country have had “family” disputes but never to the point of hatred or wishing destruction of another member or part of the family. We were family. We were one nation. When attacked (9/11) or troubled by a death (JFK) or crashes (US Air flight 1549 – Sullenberger) or reflecting on past pain (Pearl Harbor) or victories (V-E Day), we came together to sing or serve or cry together. Despite internal squabbles, we were one!
But such is not the case today for we have stepped away from the “one nation” idea, in part because we have stepped away from a belief in or acknowledgement of God. The idea or truth of God gave us a central point or a focus point outside of us. The idea of God reminded us of a source of wisdom, of a Being to be answered to, and that we were not all that important. The idea of God was powerful! With God out, oneness unravels for there is no reference point.
While we claim being “indivisible”, there are a number of forces at work to create division for it is the goal of some to divide us into groups and then turn those groups on each other in order to destroy us (those who think a one world order is the way to save the planet and bring about worldwide peace).
What is happening is the polarizing of peoples into classes who are angry with other classes. It is class warfare which will most inevitably end in the destruction of one or more classes and then the country. We saw this happen in Germany in the 1930’s where Jews were separated apart from other Germans and then moved for extermination which ultimately brought the destruction of Germany.
Oh, that we would learn from history!
As Christians, we must be ever mindful of this truth: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus, Galatians 3:28.
Back to those opening six points from our pledge… Take time to ponder on each and give God both credit and glory and consider a recommitment to both adoring and promoting each point.
