The Statute of Liberty reminds me of our life in Jesus. Consider her and Christianity:
- She stands firm and tall.
Psalm 3:3, But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head.
Psalm 42:2, And set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.
- She holds forth a light – a torch.
Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
- She wears a crown.
Psalm 103:4, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
- She wears a robe.
Isaiah 61:10, I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has
clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.
- She holds a tablet inscribed with July 4, 1776.
John 3:7, Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
- She stands beside a broken shackle.
John 8:31-32, Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
- She is in a harbor of rest
Matthew 11:28, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
- She was a gift.
Romans 5:15, But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.
- She bears a poem by Emma Lazarus inviting wretches to come.
Psalm 146:5-7, Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the Lord his God, Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; Who keeps truth forever, Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The Lord gives freedom to the prisoners.
- She stands at the entrance to a new land.
Heb. 11:8-11, By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
She is a grand old lady inviting the wretched into her rest and such is our Jesus and our new life.
