One piece of the teaching at the Men’s Advance held on Saturday, Dec. 29, was based on Micah 6:8. So, what does God want from us in 2019? Three things! The same three things He wanted from us in 2018 and in 2016 and in 2015, etc. He wants us to exercise justice, love mercy, and live humbly before our God.
God has shown us these three things.
1. Is God just? Absolutely and all the time! What God says, He does. God is good to His word, His character, and His laws – always! God is just!
2. Is God merciful? It is beyond my comprehension how much patience God extended to sinful, rebellious, and arrogant Israel in the Old Testament. How they existed for centuries is only because God is incredibly merciful. What a loving God!
3. Is God humble? Humm! He asks for, and even demands, men to worship Him by giving Him glory and service. Is that humble? If it were a mortal with the pride issue, sin issue, and/or self issue; it would NOT be humble. But it is God Who is holy – sinless! For Him to call for and expect glory is not sin but correct for such a Being and it is a means for us to receive blessings in response. God is humble because God is holy.
So, God has “shown you, O man, what is good and what does the Lord require?”
First, to be just is to be about truth. One who is just is in the truth (“Thy Word is truth”) so to know the truth and live and keep the truth. One who is just is also fully about keeping one’s word – no lies, no white lies, and no “I don’t remember” excuses! God expects us to be people of integrity. That is, wherever we are, we are true to Him and to our word, our vows, and our contracts (as a citizen of a country – know and keep its laws). In 2019, may we be just!
Second, may we love mercy. That is, we forgive and we give and give and give. We are willing to take a loss or suffer punishment and thus let them off or gift them who should be paying. May our love be rich like God’s love is to us.
Third, God wants us to be humble. We don’t “deserve” this and that as the world screams. No, we labor all day then come in and hear the master ask us to do more and we gladly do so (Luke 17:7-8). We are to be joyfully submissive, incredibly humbled that Jesus took our wrath, and deeply moved that the great Creator lets us call Him Father and loves us despite our many slips. WOW! May we be about His will in 2019: Do Justly, Love Mercy, and Live Humbly before our God!
