Daily Blessings

What are some things that have enhanced life?

What is a daily blessing?  SCREENS!  [this from Kent Johansen from an old timer in Pella, IA]

Yes, those wire or fiberglass mesh coverings over the openings of a house.  I remember the flies at my Grandparents’ at mealtime that constantly demanded attention and this was with screens!  Just think of the day with no screens and yummy, hot foods brought to the table along with the call to dinner – and the flies raced to the feast!  Yes, screens – what an improvement!

Another great invention and improvement is the tin can.  Because of the sealable tin can (or now often aluminum), pineapples, sardines, SPAM and other delightful foods can be enjoyed year-round!  Before cans, some foods and products were a rarity or even a non-option most months.  The can allowed goods to be sealed and shipped long distances and stored for long periods of time.  What a blessing – especially noteworthy at mealtime.

One more – the innerspring mattress.  Imagine sleeping on a bag of feathers?  What about sleeping on boards?   If one is tired enough, one can sleep about anywhere, but to retire to a bed that supports, cradles, and is consistent – not lumpy – is wonderful!  (Janet and I sleep on foam which is also great!).  We are nightly blessed to have good beds.

Look around and consider the things that you take for granted but without them you would be troubled (I really like my recliner with the reading light nearby).  Be thankful!  (what about your shoes?)

Thank you, Lord, for the multitude of perks we daily enjoy and are often under or unappreciated.  We are richly blessed!
